Purpose | Students will learn a process for writing a properly structured traditional five-paragraph essay. | The course reinforces the level 1 skills and strengthens students' ability to develop arguments. | Students who can plan and write well-developed essays will learn how to make their essays flow smoothly. |
Topics | Brainstorming, organizing, and outlining Writing complete paragraphs Revising for clarity | Writing effective introductions Developing concrete examples and detailed arguments Writing concluding application statements | Clarifying logical connections Writing efficiently by cutting unnecessary words Avoiding repetitive word choices and sentence structures |
Level 1 is designed for students with little to no experience writing full essays but who can write paragraphs with some guidance. Level 2 assumes that students can outline and write an essay somewhat independently. Level 3 assumes that students can write essays independently with well-developed arguments. If you are not sure what level is best for your student, send a sample persuasive essay to me at jonathanwest1@gmail.com. If your student does not have a sample, see a list of many possible topics for writing one.
Weekly homework is intended to take less than an hour.
