Content


Students will learn how to plan and write an ACT essay in the given time and how to prepare for test day. This includes


  • Analyzing the prompt
  • Developing an outline
  • Knowing what to include in the introduction and conclusion
  • Writing properly structured body paragraphs with well-developed points
  • Making the most of the available time
  • Strategically preparing for the test day


Target Grade Levels


Students should be able to write a basic essay independently before taking this class. If your child has already taken the intermediate or advanced essay class, you can consult with me about whether your child is ready. If your student has not taken one of those classes, along with registering, have your child write an untimed essay on any ACT prompt (such as this oneand send it to me at jonathanwest1@gmail.comI will use this to determine if this class matches your child's level.

How many essays will students write?


​Four or more, depending on the number of weeks.


How much homework will students get?


Typically, less than an hour a week.


Is this class appropriate for my child?


See "target grade levels" above.


What is the difference between the ACT and SAT essays?


The ACT essay involves arguing a point of view on a controversial topic. The SAT involves rhetorical analysis. However, the SAT no longer includes the essay in most situations.


When is payment due?


​By the second lesson.


When will I get the Zoom link?


An email will be sent to registrants with instructions.


​Will students benefit from this course if they do not take the ACT essay?


This class should improve general essay writing and writing in timed situations.


Will students need the textbooks at the first class?


Students should ideally have the textbooks by the second class. Having them by the third class is acceptable.


Would my child benefit from repeating this class?


The class is not currently designed to be repeated. However, I am considering options for students who would benefit from more guided practice.
